Animals, what are our responsibilities toward them?

This past weekend, the circus came to town. As a kid I loved the circus, even into high school. I even thought that I would run away and join the circus. I wanted to be an acrobat… but I have never been a huge fan of the animal acts. As I got older and I realized the horrific animal abuses that many circus animals suffer, most especially the elephants. Because of that I won’t take my children. I will not support it.

This got me thinking about the other ways that animals amaze us, suffer for us, are helped by us, sometimes hurt us, and then, what are responsibilities to them?

Do we have a responsibility to do our best to not cause them to suffer for our own gain?

  1. I think it's wonderful that you are so passionate about animal rights and that you refuse to take your children to the circus because of many of the abuses you mention here. I've been a vegetarian for the past 13 years, and even though I started for health reasons, my views towards vegetarianism have really changed over the years. There are so many alternatives out there to eating meat so it just makes sense that I would choose a lifestyle that is not only healthier for me, but beneficial to the planet (and our little animal friends).

I have yet to watch "Discovery Cove" though I've heard good things (I just don't know if I'll be able to stomach it, to be honest). Have you seen it?

Thanks so much for stopping by–I love your blog and will continue to look around :)
