Tomorrow is the beginning of Screen-Free Week 2012. The benefits of reducing screen time are clear for all of us, yet it is so tempting. I believe there are benefits we gain from technology, but we also have a lot to lose by not keeping our usage in check when it matters most.

I look forward to showing you and the readers of Green Child Magazine a look at what a life without screens can look like. Watch this video for some startling statistics about our technology habits and how they affect our children.

Sunday Surfing

Pervasive Plastic. How many times have you had a conversation about a topic you are passionate about and later thought of so many things you wished you said? Now imagine you were on national television. Beth did amazingly well with the short amount of time she was given in an unusual situation to explain about our problems with plastic. But read on about albatrosses, plastic, and what we can all do when something moves us.

Crafty Gnomes. Spring has sprung and so have the gardening chores. Add a little modern flair to yours with this fun project creating mini garden gnomes. Seriously cute.

Honesty In Sustainability. Anna takes on the sustainable efforts of a huge organic beverage company and its CEO’s compelling interview about ethics and recycling. What would you put on your wish list for the company?

Kitchen Work. We all know that making everything from scratch is almost always better than anything else. It’s cheaper and you can choose what ingredients you use. I don’t use extracts often, but I might start using homemade almond extract a little more if I used this recipe!

Big Bugs. Good weather means more bugs and other creatures to deal with. I often take the stance that we impose ourselves on nature, but that doesn’t mean I want creepy crawlies in my home if I can help it. These eco-friendly tips to get rid of ants are great to keep in mind as the sun starts to shine.

Giveaway. Handcrafted herbal bath and body products from Herban Lifestyle are made from the finest natural, organic and Fair Trade ingredients in small batches to ensure the highest quality for your delicate skin then wrapped in planet-friendly packaging. Go enter to win!

  3. Hi Brenna, I just surfed in from somewhere or other else :)

I love the idea of a completely screen free week. My kids’ school encourages a screen free week each term, and we usually have at least a TV free week (which doesn’t make a huge difference to the kids since they don’t watch any on school days anyway, but sometimes we do it in the holidays too), but I have never managed a computer free week for myself!
