Waiting on the world to change

Just an excerpt:

“Now we see everything that’s going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don’t have the means
To rise above and beat it

So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

It’s hard to beat the system
When we’re standing at a distance
So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change”

I realize that this song is several years old, but it seems like I have been hearing it a lot lately. And it has really struck a nerve.

I had a party recently and had about 13 women in my home. After the party was winding down and I had enjoyed a nice glass of wine. I ended up on my sopabox talking about the chemicals in personal care products, the rates of cancer and the environmental impact on them, and Nestle.

I was truthfully going on and on and started to wonder if I was, perhaps, going a little too far in my zest. But, these are issues that I am passionate about. The health and safety of my children and the environment they are living in and I am leaving for them… that is what keeps me researching, fighting, and sharing.

That is what makes me so sad about this song. People feel powerless. They feel ineffective. They feel that their one small voice won’t make a difference. I can’t imagine feeling that way. Grassroots activism is the core of most, of not all, movements for change. Where would we be without people who believed that their voices needed to be heard? People who believed that their actions could make a difference. They would not wait for someone else, but would get out there and demand change.

Today, I am going to ask all of you to find something you are passionate about and do something about it. There are so many ways to effect change, from the micro-local to the international. What can you do to change the world?
