It’s only in the high 80s right now, but it is expected to get close to 100 today. I know most of the country is experiencing some pretty high temperatures as well. Summer is finally here, but for little ones the heat can really take it’s toll. Especially if you don’t have air conditioning in your home (which is one of the least eco-friendly methods anyhow!).
What are some fun ways to beat the heat with kids?
- Homemade popsicles. Using organic ingredients and either a silicone (recipe included here) or stainless steel molds make the best choices! Or try these cool popsicle sticks that teach about global warming!
- Choose cooling foods. Fruit is always a good choice for us, plus those with lots of water are also hydrating. Spicy foods, while seemingly counterintuitive, also have cooling effects. Take a culinary tour around the world. Thai anyone?
- Find a shady park, especially if it has a nice water feature. Take a picnic with lots of cool foods and a fun roll-up picnic blanket.
- Visit your public library. I know ours has air conditioning, plus storytime and lots and lots of books!
- Hit the beach! Just don’t forget the safe sunscreen and sun hat. Frugi even has organic ones!
What’s your favorite way to beat the heat?
