Natural pregnancy and birth in Going to the Motherland, plus a giveaway!

Imagine your funniest girlfriend giving you advice about a natural pregnancy (from conception through to baby) and you will have an idea about what Going to the Motherland by Sarah Blight is all about. In other words, if you are expecting to be a natural mama, but need a lighter read and great takeaways that are easy to remember, then this is the book for you.

I am long past thinking about pregnancy (well maybe not long, but it feels like it sometimes), but it was still a fun read. The tone and the no-holds barred information is enjoyable and conversational. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to conceive or pregnant already, along with my other favorite pregnancy and birth books.

'Going to the Motherland' by Sarah Blight

What I loved about Going to the Motherland:

  • Discussion of the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, as a great way to learn more about your own body and find what your normal is. I loved that book myself and immediately knew I was reading something I could relate to. Even if you don’t know the referenced book, I am sure you will find Going to the Motherland easily relatable too and you may learn a thing or two!
  • The takeaways. At the end of each chapter, the main points are broken down for you in an easy to remember format. It can be hard to remember everything that you liked while reading, so the quick to the point takeaways are great!
  • The specifics about how to “date” your doctor or midwife. This is so, so important and I found the way she guides you to develop questions to ask and finding out what YOU want so you can find a provider that fits that vision (while understanding that things don’t always go according to plan).
  • Doulas! This book highlights the very important role that doulas can have in your birth. Love that!
  • Providing exercises to develop mental toughness and focus. Truly these are exercises that will serve you well long after the birth of your sweet baby!
  • Great explanations of medicated births, un-medicated births, inductions and their natural alternatives, and c-sections. Education is the key to making good decisions.
  • Chooses organic and natural resource so you can too!

I’ve wanted to write my birth story for months now and I think I just might get it done this week! I’ve never thought it could be a whole book though. It sounds like a good read and sounds as if our births may have had some similarities so I’d enjoy reading it. I’m still all loved up from my birth so I enjoy birth stories :)
